HERBAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE

The Herbal Research and Development Institute (HRDI), a nodal agency of Uttarakhand Medicinal Plant Board, has been established at Gopeshwar in 1989 for conservation, development and sustainable utilization of the valuable Medicinal and Aromatic Plant resources of Uttarakhand. It is an autonomous institute of the Uttarakhand Government registered under the Registration of Societies Act, 1860. The main objective of HRDI is to co-ordinate medicinal and aromatic plants activities carried out by various Govt agencies, farmers, research institutes, NGOs, etc. The main field activities of the institute cover the following areas:-

The Institute

Herbal Research and Development Institute (HRDI) is an autonomous and Nodal Agency under Uttarakhand State Medicinal Plant Board. Head Office of the institute is located at Mandal-Gopeshwar in Chamoli district almost near to holy peaks of Tungnath, Anusuya and Rudranath. Head quarter extended in 7 ha of land including nusery, playhouses, greenhouses, mist chambers, bamboo houses, official and residential infrastructures.

Area surrounded by dense forest in western side and villager’s habitation in eastern side. It is situated at 1600msl and occasionally snow fall occurs during winters but snow do not exist for long time due to low height. Wild satawar, chirayata, daruhaldi and other important medicinal plants with many species of orchids exists nearby forest. It is also a beautiful place for tourism also. Distance from district headquarter Gopeshwar is 16 km far from the institute.

Main Activities

Prioritized Species for Cultivation
State government has prioritized following 26 MAP species for mass cultivation covering all agro-climatic zones like sub-tropical, temperate and alpine regions and has decided to provide 50 % subsidy on the cost of cultivation to boost up cultivation that will pay a rich dividend to the growers. Subsidy on selected Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.
