About HRDI

HERBAL RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE

The Herbal Research and Development Institute (HRDI), a nodal agency of Uttarakhand Medicinal Plant Board, has been established at Gopeshwar in 1989 for conservation, development and sustainable utilization of the valuable Medicinal and Aromatic Plant resources of Uttarakhand. It is an autonomous institute of the Uttarakhand Government registered under the Registration of Societies Act, 1860. The main objective of HRDI is to co-ordinate medicinal and aromatic plants activities carried out by various Govt agencies, farmers, research institutes, NGOs, etc. The main field activities of the institute cover the following areas:-
  • Cultivation of valuable Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of Uttarakhand, primarily to improve livelihood opportunities.
  • Survey, inventorisation and conservation of biodiversity of medicinal and aromatic plants.
  • Research on agro-technique, bio-diversity, biotechnology and genetic improvement of Medicinal and Medicinal Plants.
  • Development of cultivation techniques for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants and transfer of technology to the farmers and growers.
  • Revitalization of traditional knowledge and the ancients' Indian medicine system, Ayurveda.
  • Quality control assessment and research on active ingredients and substances of medicinal and aromatic plants.
  • Human resource development, extension and dissemination of information relating to medicinal and aromatic plants.
  • Co-ordination of activities of institutions/ departments engaged in development of medicinal and aromatic plants in Uttarakhand.

The Institute

Herbal Research and Development Institute (HRDI) is an autonomous and Nodal Agency under Uttarakhand State Medicinal Plant Board. Head Office of the institute is located at Mandal-Gopeshwar in Chamoli district almost near to holy peaks of Tungnath, Anusuya and Rudranath. Head quarter extended in 7 ha of land including nusery, playhouses, greenhouses, mist chambers, bamboo houses, official and residential infrastructures.

Area surrounded by dense forest in western side and villager’s habitation in eastern side. It is situated at 1600msl and occasionally snow fall occurs during winters but snow do not exist for long time due to low height. Wild satawar, chirayata, daruhaldi and other important medicinal plants with many species of orchids exists nearby forest. It is also a beautiful place for tourism also. Distance from district headquarter Gopeshwar is 16 km far from the institute.

Services Provided

  • The institute offers following services in the area of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants:-
  • Consultancy/technical services for conservation, cultivation and processing of medicinal and Aromatic Plants.
  • Transfer of technology for cultivation, value addition and processing.
  • Survey of land for cultivation and preparation of feasibility report.
  • Supply of quality planting material.
  • Training to farmers, entrepreneurs and researchers.
  • Supply of information on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.
  • Intellectual property rights related information.
  • Registration of MAP cultivation, transit pass and subsidy.

Main Activities

  • The institute is dedicated in the following fields of conservation, processing and utilization of MAPs:-
  • Survey, inventorization, conservation and mass-scale cultivation of valuable medicinal and aromatic plants of Uttarakhand.
  • Research on bio-diversity, bio-technology, quality control, value addition and genetic improvement of medicinal and aromatic plants.
  • Development of agro-techniques for cultivation and processing of medicinal and aromatic plants and technology transfer to the growers.
  • Revitalization of local health traditional and ancient Indian medicinal system, Ayurveda.
  • Hunan resource development, extension and dissemination of information related to medicinal and aromatic plants.
  • Co-ordination among activities of institutions/departments /NGOs/co-operatives / growers etc engaged in research and development of medicinal and aromatic plants in the state of Uttarakhand.
  • To develop linkages by collaborating with Central Government agencies and industries of with other states.
  • To advise the State Government in policy matters and decision makings.
  • Important Policies for Sustainable Development of MAPs
  • Registration of MAPs/ farmers/growers.
  • Providing free planting material to farmers up to 10 nali land for cultivation.
  • Providing 50 % subsidy to the registered farmers/growers on prioritized 26 species.
  • Establishment of distillation units for aromatic crops with 95% government assistance.
  • Provide training to farmers/entrepreneurs/ traders on cultivation, processing, value addition and trade of MAPs.
  • Provide transit permit for cultivated MAPs and help farmers in trade of cultivated MAPs.
  • Provide trade platform by organizing awareness programmes ie workshops, seminars, herbal expo within and outside the state.

Prioritized Species for Cultivation
State government has prioritized following 26 MAP species for mass cultivation covering all agro-climatic zones like sub-tropical, temperate and alpine regions and has decided to provide 50 % subsidy on the cost of cultivation to boost up cultivation that will pay a rich dividend to the growers. Subsidy on selected Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.
